Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer to opt in to the final 3 years of contract
Boston will pay the league minimum for Hosmer the next three seasons
Red Sox first baseman Eric Hosmer will opt in to the final three years of his $39 million contract, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
The 33-year-old came to the Red Sox at the MLB trade deadline along with two additional prospects for lefty Jay Groome.
Boston will only pay Hosmer the league minimum, while the Padres are on the hook for the remaining salary.
Hosmer played in 14 games for the Red Sox last season. Over that span he had 11 hits, three doubles, no homers, four RBI’s while hitting .244 at the plate. The left-handed slugger landed on the injured list with back inflammation and missed 38 games.
The Red Sox could entertain trading Hosmer this offseason. It should be noted that he does have a full no-trade clause and would need to approve a deal to another team.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora likes Hosmer and would welcome him back to the clubhouse next season.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself,” Cora said to The Athletic. “There’s a lot of conversations, stuff we have to do in the offseason. I’ll leave that to the front office. But as a manager, he’s a guy you really like in the clubhouse. He brings a presence. I don’t know what the future holds here with everything that’s going to happen and where we’re going. But we like him.”
