Done deal: Red Sox acquire Eric Hosmer and two prospects for left-hander Jay Groome
The Red Sox acquired first baseman Eric Hosmer from the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, the deal was first reported by Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Boston will also acquire two prospects from the Padres infielder Max Ferguson and outfielder Corey Rosier. Ferguson is ranked as the Padres No. 23 prospect and Rosier in the top 30 according to Baseball America.
Hosmer comes back to Boston and gives the bonafide first baseman. He is is hitting .272 with eight homers, 40 RBIs and a .727 OPS in 90 games this year. The left-handed Hosmer will also bring four Gold Gloves to Fenway Park and will provide a massive upgrade over Bobby Dalbec and Franchy Cordero.
The final money details haven’t been announced. Hosmer has roughly $39 million through the end of the 2025 season. Hosmer is a former World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals in 2015. He signed an eight-year, $144 million deal with the Padres before the 2018 season.
