Heyman: Sam Fuld is a logical candidate for Red Sox front office vacancy
Current Phillies GM has been linked to Boston
Sam Fuld is one of many names that will likely be in the running to be the next front office leader of the Boston Red Sox. The current Philadelphia Phillies general manager was the runner up to Alex Cora to be the next manager back in the 2020 offseason. He has since worked side by side Dave Dombrowski and is entering his second straight postseason.
Fuld was mentioned as a logical candidate by Jon Heyman in his recent news and notes. The New Hampshire native, is known for his analytical mind and brings a unique perspective as recent former player. Former Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks mentioned a couple weeks ago that he viewed Fuld as a dark horse candidate.
Whether he is considered a logical or dark horse candidate, Fuld makes a ton of sense to be seriously considered if not hired by the Red Sox. Ever since he has gotten to Philadelphia, Fuld has learned from Dombrowski what winning is all about.
There are many qualities that makes Fuld an attractive candidate. He would be coming from a successful background as an executive, knows the passion and importance of the Red Sox growing up in the New England area, and had prior interest shown by Red Sox ownership. It would be foolish to not think Fuld is near the top of the unknown list CEO Sam Kennedy mentioned at his end of season press conference.
Kennedy was tight lipped on names, rightfully so during the press conference, but really wouldn’t open up too much on even the qualities the Red Sox are looking for. He did say on the Fenway Rundown podcast with Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam that it is not a requirement that the next person had to have prior experience being the number one leader in a front office.
Given that Fuld already holds the GM title in Philadelphia, he would have to be offered a title that is a step up from that. A structure of him as the President of Baseball Operations and letting him pick a GM, internally or externally, would make a lot of sense.
Much like Dombrowski promoted Mike Hazen to GM when he got hired by the Red Sox Fuld could do the same. Logically promoting Eddie Romero to general manager under Fuld could create a power structure that ownership and manager Cora could get behind. Kennedy said that interviews for their next leader could begin as soon as this week.
