Red Sox fans should be excited for June
With the month of May coming to an end in just a couple of days, it is worth discussing the upcoming month of June. So far, the Red Sox have been a very streaky team. The month of May started with a six-game winning streak (eight if you count the end of April), while following it up by losing six of seven. However, Red Sox fans should be excited for June to arrive. Here is why:
The Red Sox are historically good in June
Yes, this year’s roster is constructed very differently than last year’s. But June has been one of the Red Sox best months in recent history. Last season, the Sox won 20 games in June, which was statistically the best month that season. This was the same case in 2021, while that team won 18 games.
In the past five years (excluding the pandemic season), the Red Sox are 70-38 in the month of June. The team currently is struggling with starting pitching and offense. Someone on both the starting pitching staff and the offense will probably have to step up if the Sox are going to have a great month of June. Although success is not guaranteed, recent history is on the team’s side.Â
Reinforcements are on the way
The Sox have been a victim of the injury bug early in the season. They have surprisingly adapted, as the emergence of Jarren Duran and Enmanuel Valdez has caught the attention of many fans and analysts. With the likes of Christian Arroyo and Adam Duvall set to return in the near future, decisions are going to be made roster wise. Also, there are many questions about Yu Chang. Does the team send down Duran or Valdez? Does Pablo Reyes get DFA’d? Does the organization go as far as to send Casas down? This is always one of the better problems to have.
If Duvall returns to the type of player he was in the first eight games of the season, he will help a struggling Red Sox offense. Plus, regardless of which version of Adam Duvall the Sox get, he provides power on the right side, which the Sox have had virtually none of this season.Â
Triston Casas is heating up
Finally, after a rough April where Casas slashed .133/.283/.293, he is starting to heat up. Many fans have been wondering when Casas would break out and start to look like the promising prospect he once was. In the month of May, thus far he has slashed .277/.360/.462, which is good for an OPS+ of 124. He has shown better discipline at the plate by working the count, and the hits are starting to come.
However, one of the aspects of Casas that has lacked is his amount of HRs. Casas only has six HRs in the season at the time of this article, three in each month. As the warm weather arrives in most parts of the United States (and Canada), expect that home run total to double in the month of June as the baseballs will be in the air for longer.
