Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida wanting to ‘enjoy the process’ makes two rehab starts with the WooSox
Red Sox outfielder and designated hitter Masataka Yoshida played in two rehab games for the Worcester Red Sox over the weekend.
The Japanese star batted second and was the DH in his two games on Saturday and Sunday. Yoshida went 1-for-7 with two runs scored and two strikeouts.
“It’s been a while since I faced actual pitchers, and I wanted to go out there and see how I felt against actual pitchers,” Yoshida said through a team interpreter.
Yoshida has been on the injured list, dealing with a thumb injury. Prior to missing time, he batted .275 with 3 doubles, 2 home runs, and 11 RBIs in 24 games for Boston.
The 31-year-old said that his thumb feels good and was relieved to get back into game action over the weekend. Yoshida may also join the WooSox on the road beginning Tuesday when they begin a six game series in Buffalo.
“Just trying to do everything I can do to get ready and just trying everything I can do to stay prepared,” Yoshida said to Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. “It’s my first time getting injured in the majors, so it’s something I’ve never experienced before at this level. I’m just trying to enjoy the process, getting back at it, and just looking forward to the day I come back.”
Yoshida is in his second season with the Red Sox after signing as a free agent in December 2022. In his first full season with Boston, he hit .289 with 33 doubles, 3 triples, 15 home runs, 72 RBIs, and a .783 OPS in 140 games.
The Red Sox are hoping Yoshida rejoins the club by June 13, but don't expect him before that date.
“I just want to go back up there as soon as I can and contribute to the victory of the team,” Yoshida said. “It’s getting better. I don’t think it’s going to be a while.”
