The Red Sox designated infielder Yu Chang for assignment on Tuesday, making room for shortstop Trevor Story who was reinstated off the 60-day injured list.
With the move, the Red Sox’ 40-man roster is at 39.
Boston was deciding between Chang and Pablo Reyes to clear the roster spot to activate Story.
Chang played 39 games for the Red Sox this season, batting .162 with two doubles, six homers and 18 RBI. He played 33 games at shortstop, four games at second base, two at first base and one at third base.
The 27-year-old missed time this season following hamate surgery on his left hand. His recovery wasn’t smooth, suffering two setbacks while rehabbing with the Portland Sea Dogs and the WooSox.
Story was on the injured list this season recovering from right elbow surgery.
“Hopefully, he hits three out of the ballpark today and he goes off right away,” Alex Cora said. “He’s an All-Star caliber player, one of the best offensive shortstops in the league three years ago, two years ago, whatever it was. Hits the ball in the air, can run the bases well and he’s a great defender.
“We’re talking about one of the best shortstops in the big leagues the last 8-10 years, whatever it is. We just have to make sure we keep him healthy, take the right steps and everybody around here is patient with him. He hasn’t played in a while and it’s still the big leagues. We’re pretty confident he’ll get his rhythm soon. Hopefully, it’s today right away. He’s a good player. He’s a great addition for us.”
In his first season with the Red Sox, Story batted .238 (85-for-357) with 22 doubles, 16 home runs, and 66 RBI.

Well boys and girls how did the savior of a SS Trevor Story do? He did an all star job going 0-4 with 2 Ks. Can’t wait to read about the excuses. chaim has a knack for overpaying mediocrity.
He was drafted out of high school took 5 years to get to the majors for the incredible Colorado Rockies, so all those awesome stats that are touted he accomplished by playing in the thin air of Denver, CO. Let’s see him get close the stats that Xander had and that includes a World Series title. I will not be holding my breath. By the way I live on the West Coast and have been to Fenway Park many times since 1994 when I became a fan of the Red Sox.
