Red Sox designate right-hander Kaleb Ort for assignment
The Red Sox have designated right-handed reliever Kaleb Ort for assignment, a source confirms to Beyond the Monster.
Ort was placed on outright waivers with the intention of removing him off the 40-man roster. If he clears waivers, the Red Sox can assign him back to Triple-A Worcester.
The former Rule-5 selection from the Yankees, has struggled during his time with the Red Sox. He owns a career 6.27 ERA over 51 2/3 innings with Boston.
Ort has seen more success at the Triple-A level, owning a 3.09 career ERA in 131 career innings.
The 31-year-old spent three months on the injured list with right elbow inflammation. He would make three relief appearances for the WooSox in September but was never activated by the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will need to make additional decisions on players residing on the 60-day injured list. Anyone on the 60-day IL needs to be activated at the end of the postseason and counts against the 40-man max.
Boston will have some key minor leaguers theyโll need to protect on the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft. Shane Drohan, Ryan Fernandez, Wikelman Gonzaelz and Nick Sogard are all names to watch this winter as options for the 40-man roster.
If Ort remains with the organization, heโll likely sit at Triple-A moving forward and serve as depth for the major league bullpen.
