Carlos Febles will not return to the Red Sox in 2024
The Red Sox fired third base/infield coach Carlos Febles, per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
Boston also fired pitching coach Dave Bush on Monday afternoon, in an effort to shake up Alex Cora’s coaching staff.
As of now, the Sox have not announced replacements for both Bush and Febles, the team has also not decided on addition changes to Cora’s staff, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Febles has been a member of the Red Sox organization since 2007 and part of the major league coaching staff since Nov. 2017. Over the last six seasons, Febles has worked with the team’s infielders on defense.
The Red Sox were poor defensively this season, leading to his dismissal on Monday.
The 47-year-old played six seasons with the Royals and spent the 2004 season with Triple-A Pawtucket. He then spent three seasons as a minor league coach before managing Short-A Lowell in 2011. Febles also served as manager of Double-A Greenville (2012-13), High-A Salem (2014-15) and Double-A Portland (2016-17).
The firing of Febles is somewhat surprising due to the fact of his close relationship with Cora. During last week’s press conference, Cora told reporters that Febles was going to play an important role in working with infielders this offseason. He particularly cited working with second baseman Enmanuel Valdez during winter ball.
Cora told reporters that he didn’t think a shakeup was needed on his staff, clearly someone else within the organization felt changes were needed.
“I don’t believe so,” Cora said when asked if he thought a shakeup was needed. “I think we just have to be better, in a sense. We have to be willing to go and talk to people and adjust our routines. That’s something that we’ve been talking about the whole season. I know people talk about the coaching stuff and everything but the people that followed us the whole time saw that we did a lot of things that we don’t usually do. It didn’t work but it’s not lack of trying. It’s not lack of effort. It’s not lack of knowledge. It’s just that you’ve gotta keep trying to find ways for these guys to be better.”
The Red Sox will look for replacements in the coming weeks and will likely make these decisions once a new front office leader has been appointed.
