Boston needed to move two players off the 40-man roster after adding five prospects ahead of the 5 p.m. deadline.
Ceddanne Rafaela, David Hamilton, Wilyer Abreu, Brandon Walter and Chris Murphy are now protected from the Rule 5 Draft in December.
Both Reed and Hamilton came to the Red Sox as waiver claims. Hamilton was claimed from the Twins on Oct. 11 and Reed came in two days later.

Reed is a journeyman reliever who is known for his different unorthodox delivery when on the mound. The Arizona native throws a sinker and slider while mixing in an occasional four-seam fastball and changeup. His sinker sits 87–88 mph and tops out around 90 mph. According to FanGraphs, his low arm slot when throwing his sinker, the ball gets a “ton of sink.”
Hamilton spent seven years in the Twins organization prior to being DFA’d in October. He made his major league debut last season. The Washington native went 1-for-18 with a homer, five runs, four walks and 14 strikeouts.
Both players could remain in The Red Sox organization, they’ll both need to pass through waivers.
