The Red Sox claimed catcher Caleb Hamilton off waivers from the Twins on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the club designated outfielder Abraham Almonte for assignment.
The moves were confirmed by the leagues transactions log.
The 27-year-old Hamilton spent seven years in the Twins organization. He played with Triple-A last season hitting . 233 with a .367 on-base percentage, .808 OPS, 11 homers, 10 doubles, 34 runs, 43 RBIs, 43 walks and 67 strikeouts in 62 games.
The Washington native also made his major league debut this past year. He went 1-for-18 with a homer, five runs, four walks and 14 strikeouts for Minnesota.
Hamilton provides the Red Sox depth behind Ronaldo Hernandez at Triple-A Worcester. The former 23rd round pick has two of his three options remaining. This could give the Red Sox luxury of shuffling him back and forth between the majors and minors. In addition, the new backstop is three years away from arbitration.
The Red Sox now have four catchers on their 40-man roster in Reese McGuire, Connor Wong, Hernandez and Hamilton.
