Red Sox designate Eric Hosmer for assignment
The Red Sox have designated veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer for assignment on Friday evening. The move was to make room for new right-hander Wyatt Mills, who the club acquired from the Royals for pitching prospect Jacob Wallace.
Hosmer came to the Red Sox in a deal at the MLB trade deadline with two prospects for left-hander Jay Groome. As part of the trade, the Padres agreed to pay Hosmer’s entire remaining salary minus the league minimum., which Boston is on the hook for.
Hosmer is owed $39 million over the next three seasons. San Diego will be responsible for that money.
Last season, Hosmer batted .268 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs for both the Sox and Padres.

Hosmer only played 14 games due to a back injury for the Red Sox and will need to clear waivers in order to pick his new home for 2023. Boston can trade the veteran but due to his no-trade clause, it maybe difficult to find the right match.
Now that Hosmer is gone, Triston Casas is the club’s primary target to play first base next season. Hosmer would have provided depth at the position. Manager Alex Cora still has Bobby Dalbec and Christian Arroyo as depth options behind Casas.
