Red Sox we’re ‘never meaningfully involved’ for free agent Carlos Correa
The San Francisco Giants made a massive splash in free agency on Tuesday night. The Giants signed prized free agent shortstop Carlos Correa to a 13-year, $350 million deal with a full no-trade clause and no opt-outs.
This is a massive deal for Correa who had been connected to the Red Sox as an option this offseason.
Fans and some in the media speculated that the Red Sox could pivot to Correa after losing Xander Bogaerts to the Padres. Bogaerts signed an 11-year, $280 million deal with San Diego last week.
Correa a legitimate option for the Red Sox?
On Tuesday, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe wrote an article on comments from Chaim Bloom on addressing the infield. Speier would write, “Bloom said the Sox are open to having both Trevor Story and Kiké Hernández in the middle infield and making a move for a center fielder.”
Bloom also told The Athletic the day prior that Hernández “is our center fielder” and that the club was still looking at “different possibilities.”
Boston never sincerely considered Correa as an option for 2023 and beyond. Correa was not part of the “different possibilities” conversation.
According to Speier, “As recently as this afternoon, my understanding was that the Sox were never meaningfully involved on Correa.”
Red Sox fans on social media have been thirsting for a massive free agent splash this offseason. The biggest move has been free agent closer Kenley Jansen who was introduced to the media on Tuesday.
Boston maybe right in the long term to not issue a massive contract with a commitment of 13 years to a player. Correa’s deal will take him into his early 40’s. Bloom would be better served giving that money and commitment to Rafael Devers who is in the final year of his contract with the Red Sox.
