The Red Sox designated Christian Arroyo for assignment on Friday. They have recalled newly acquired infielder Luis Urías from Triple-A Worcester.
Urías is a versatile infielder who has played 11 games at second base and third base this season. He has previous experience at shortstop as well. This year has been rough as he has hit .145 in 68 plate appearances and then was optioned to Triple-A Nashville by the Brewers. However he has shown he can be an impactful bottom of the order bat, in 2022 he hit 16 home runs and 2021 had 23.
The 26-year-old infielder was the Sox only acquisition on deadline day. Urias was initially assigned to the WooSox after the trade, however, given this was a Red Sox target to help them for the rest of the season, he has been added to the 26-man roster.
“Obviously this is a guy who the past couple years has been a really good major league player and kind of didn’t get on track this year,” Bloom said to reporters on Zoom following the trade on Tuesday. “Had a rough start to his season. Was sent down. Started to pull it together and like where the arrow’s pointing. And just feel pretty excited to add him to our mix. And I think he’s a guy that as he’s getting back to who he is at the plate, Fenway should be a good fit for him.”
Arroyo was claimed of the waivers by the Red Sox on Aug. 13th during the 2020 season. He provided versatility in the infield and saw time in right field. The Florida native seen a steady decline in playing time between injuries and inconsistent performance. Arroyo has never played more than 87 games in a season.
Chaim Bloom was on the TC & Co. Podcast and talked about the difficulty in moving on from Arroyo.
"Really hard. The baseball side of it, Christian has not been able to get on track consistently this year. It's tough because he's a better player than this and I know he's going to have success again. What makes it harder is what he means to us... I think this is a guy who appreciates Boston, who has really bonded with our fans, that makes it hard,” said Bloom.
Since Justin Turner began to play second base in order to give Boston their best offensive lineup, Arroyo’s time with the club was numbered. The Red Sox could have cut ties with Yu Chang, but he provides a stable glove at second base and shortstop.
Urías will make his first start with the Red Sox on Friday night playing second base and will bat eighth in the lineup.
