Red Sox claim utility man off waivers from White Sox
The Red Sox made a minor move on Wednesday, claiming utility man Romy Gonzalez off waivers from the White Sox.
The club will designate pitcher Zach Weiss for assignment to make room for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster.
Gonzalez, 27, played 86 games for the White Sox since he debuted in 2021. He’s played three infield positions, primarily at second base but also at short stop and third base. In addition, he’s played right field and left field. Gonzalez is expected to serve as Triple-A depth for the Red Sox, while maintaining two options.
Gonzalez was the White Sox Opening Day right fielder last season, he was hampered by a shoulder injury and appeared in 44 games for Chicago in 2023, hitting .194/.208/.376 with three home runs.
The White Sox expected Gonzalez to be ready for the beginning of spring training. Providing he has any setbacks, the Red Sox expect Gonzalez to be a full participant in camp once it opens down in Fort Myers later this month.
Boston claimed Weiss off waivers from the Angels back in late August. He spent the remainder of the 2023 campaign in the bullpen, pitching 8 2/3 innings and holding opponents to a pair of runs on three hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.
