Veteran free agent right-handed slugger potential option for the Red Sox
The Red Sox have been engaged in the free agent and trade markets respectively looking for a right-handed power bat.
One name Boston is monitoring is veteran slugger Garrett Cooper, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
“Adam Duvall continues to be a potential option for the Red Sox as they look to add right-handed depth. One potential fallback option is Garrett Cooper who had a .904 OPS against lefties last year,” Cotillo posted on X.
Cotillo did add that he’s not able to confirm if the Red Sox and Cooper’s reps have officially spoken, but said there’s a potential match between the two.
Cooper hit .251 with 36 extra-base hits including 17 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .724 OPS in 123 games between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres last season.
The 33-year-old has shown success against left-handed pitching posting a .286/.338/.478 slash line in his career. Last season, the righty hit .324 against southpaw, hitting five homers and driving in 21 RBIs.
Boston is expected to see Justin Turner walk in free agency and other teams are focused on free agent Jorge Soler. If the Red Sox were to add Cooper, the veteran offers versatility at first base and corner outfield. If Duvall decides to sign elsewhere, Cooper is an intriguing veteran option for manager Alex Cora next season.
