Red Sox call up Connor Wong and Eduardo Bazardo
The Red Sox have added catcher Connor Wong and right-hander Eduardo Bazardo to the major league roster, per Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.
Major league rosters expanded to 28 players on Thursday. There was speculation that Triston Casas and reliever Frank German could have been candidates for call ups but both players will remain with Triple-A Worcester for now.
Bazardo will need to be added to the 40-man roster prior to the official call up. The Red Sox 40-man roster was at 39 following Austin Davis and Hirokazu Sawamura DFA’s.
Following the WooSox game on Wednesday, Wong was asked about the possibility of being called up to the big league roster. “It would be a great opportunity. It would be a lot of fun, so we’ll see what happens.”
Wong’s bat has been sizzling at the plate, the catcher has hit nine home runs in his last 16 games. He’s batted .368 with a .411 on-base percentage, 1.249 OPS, 22 RBIs in 68 at-bats this August.
Wong has appeared in five games for the Red Sox this season, he was 2-for-8 with an RBI.
Bazardo has appeared in 37 games for the Triple-A WooSox and has posted a 3.45 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Prior to the start of the season, Boston designated Bazardo for assignment. The 27-year-old cleared waivers and remained in the Sox organization.
