Red Sox bring back reliever on minor league deal
The Red Sox have signed right-handed pitcher Franklin German to a minor league deal, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
German returns to the Red Sox organization after he was designated for assignment back on Jan. 30.
Boston traded him on Feb 8. to the White Sox for current WooSox reliever Theo Denlinger.
The 25-year-old struggled in five games with the Red Sox last September. German allowed eight runs on seven hits, two home runs and four walks while striking out four in four frames.
German struggled with the White Sox Triple-A affiliate the Charlotte Knights this season. He pitched in nine games posting a 7.15 ERA with 16 strikeouts and a 2.47 WHIP over 11 1/3 innings pitched.
German’s time with the White Sox organization was short-lived after struggling at the Triple-A level. His strikeout rate was solid, striking out 26.7% of batters faced but walked 15% of batters, which provided to be troublesome for the right-hander. While with the Knights, German struggled with his control which will need to be improved if he expects to stick with the Reds.
The righty was with the Reds organization this season and was designated for assignment and subsequently released. He posted a 7.78 ERA (19 ⅔ innings, 17 runs) at Triple A this year.
The Sox originally acquired German from the Yankees along with reliever Adam Ottavino in January 2021.
While pitching for the WooSox, German was strong owning a 2.58 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 32 outings (38 1/3 innings). Opposing batters batted just .154 against the hurler.
