Red Sox’ Alex Cora ejected after going ballistic arguing with umpire in first inning
The Red Sox are playing a doubleheader on Sunday with the Twins, but skipper Alex Cora will be watching Game 1 from the clubhouse.
Cora was ejected in the first inning after going ballistic on the second base umpire over an interference call.
With Twins’ Byron Buxton at second, Red Sox hurler Nick Pivetta turned and threw to second baseman Vaughn Grissom, who went down to one knee to field the throw directly in the baseline as Buxton made his way back in safely.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli came out of the dugout and made a case of Grissom blocking Buxton’s path to the bag, and it should be interference.
The umpiring crew came together and decided to allow Buxton to advance to third on an interference call at second on a pickoff attempt.
Cora bolted out of the Red Sox dugout and became unhinged over the call. He walked out to second base twice, pointing to the bag to illustrate what Grissom was doing while screaming at the umpiring crew.
At one point, Cora had to be blocked by the other umpires because he was trying to get at the second base umpire to voice his displeasure.
Crew chief Alan Porter ejected Cora from the game. Cora is coming off the Yankees series, where he openly admitted the Sox were trying to throw at Aaron Judge. He wasn’t fined or suspended by the league, but based off his meltdown on Sunday, he could see disciplinary actions from the league.
