Red Sox recall Vaughn Grissom after recent hot streak with the WooSox
The Red Sox made a roster move prior to Friday night’s series opening 4-2 loss to the Twins. Boston placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain. To fill his spot on the expanded 28-man roster, the Red Sox recalled infielder Vaughn Grissom from Triple-A Worcester.
Grissom has been white hot in the month of September, posting a .340 batting average in 47 at-bats with the WooSox. Over that span, the former Braves’ top prospect has hit three homers with 12 RBI while walking 16 times.
Grissom went 0-for-1 in the loss on Friday.
The 2024 season has been a lost season for Grissom, dealing with injuries early on in the year, playing in 24 games for the Red Sox, and spending the majority of the summer with the WooSox.
Grissom's struggles with injuries this season are spotlighted by Chris Sale’s resurgence and potentially winning the National League Cy Young Award.
In a recent interview on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was asked if he regretted the Sale trade over the winter.
“It’s a fair question,” said Breslow. “There are 29 other teams that would benefit from Sale pitching at the front of their rotation. We would as well. I still believe that this trade can only be fairly judged and evaluated down the road. Grissom is a guy we are excited to have and will for a long time. I don’t think we saw what he is capable of doing over the course of the season.
“The Grissom we’ve seen over the last month or so in Worcester is much more indicative of the player he can be and the player that he will be here. But sure, it hurts that Sale is having such a successful season in another uniform. But I recognize that when you make these trades, that’s always a possibility, and his talent is never going to be questioned.”
Refsynder played in a career-high 93 games for the Red Sox, hitting .283 (77-for-272) with an .830 OPS, 16 doubles, 11 homers, and 40 RBI with a .830 OPS.
