Red Sox acquire intriguing RHP prospect to complete Quinn Priester trade
On Monday, the Red Sox completed the Quinn Priester trade by acquiring John Holobetz from the Milwaukee Brewers. The talented right-hander was assigned to High-A Greenville and will be looking to make a good first impression. During his time in the Brewers system, Holobetz showed that he has the potential to be a solid arm.
In five games this season, the former fifth-round pick has posted a 3.00 ERA and struck out 31 batters. Opponents are hitting .180 against him. So far, in his first taste of pro ball, Holobetz has shown excellent control and has been hard to get on base against.Â
While it is a small sample size, the 22-year-old's performance has been hard to ignore. His arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 96 miles per hour. He can also keep hitters off balance with a slider or changeup. At the moment, Holobetz's changeup is a work in progress, but it has the potential to be his best pitch.
Over the last few months, the Red Sox have prioritized adding pitching to the lower levels. Holobetz is the latest player to join that group and, at the very least, can be a good bullpen arm. The key to watch is how he fares against more advanced competition. A promotion could be on the horizon if he can build on his recent success.Â
With the trade complete, the Red Sox return is full of potential. Since joining the organization, the other piece of the deal, Yophery Rodriguez, has flashed an exciting mix of speed and power. Although he has struggled at times to get on base, the talent is there.Â
In Holobetz, the Red Sox have continued to improve their depth by adding an arm they can develop. As he gets closer to the majors, the Pennsylvania native will be a prospect to watch.Â
