Raiders’ Jimmy Garoppolo suspended 2 games, expected to be released
Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been suspended two games for violating the NFL’s Performance Enhancing Substances Policy, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Garoppolo’s violation is a result of him using a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption.
The veteran quarterback is not expected to appeal the suspension.
The Raiders are expected to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March. Due to the 32-year-old being released, he will lose out on a $11.25 million roster bonus.
The former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014 appeared in seven games for the Raiders last season. He completed 65.5 percent of his pass attempts for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.8 million deal with Las Vegas prior to last season. He was re-united with former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was his head coach with the Raiders before being fired mid-way through the season.
With new head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco, the Raiders will start fresh with a new quarterback under center for the 2024 season.
Following the release of Garoppolo, the Raiders will have Aidan O’Connell and veteran Brian Hoyer on the roster. Schefter believes that the Raiders could make a “strong play” to move up in the NFL Draft from No. 13 overall.
Under NFL rules, he will be allowed to participate in all offseason activities and training camp with his new team. Once the regular season begins, he will be barred from his new team for two weeks because of the suspension.
