Patriots find their next running backs coach
The New England Patriots plan to hire Taylor Embree as their next running backs coach, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Embree had the same role with the New York Jets for the past three seasons.
Prior to the Jets, he worked at the University of Colorado as the tight ends coach in 2020. He was the quality control coach with San Francisco from 2017-2019.
With the 49ers he worked on the same staff as the Patriots new quarterback coach T.C. McCartney.
Under Embree, the New York Jets have averaged 4.2 yards per attempt in rushing yards last season. That was ranked 14th in the NFL, the Patriots was 25th averaging only 3.9 yards.
Running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri left to join former defensive play-caller Steve Belichick at the University of Washington. Sunseri had been with New England since 2020.
The Patriots 53 man roster currently has three running backs. The depth chart is led by Rhamondre Stevenson, followed by second year back Kevin Harris, and depth man JaMycal Hasty.
Ke’Shawn Vaughn is also in the organization on a futures contract.
Overall, Embree has been coaching since 2012. The 35-year old was with UNLV before joining the Kansas City Chiefs for one season in 2016 as a defensive assistant.
New England has two more offensive staff roles to fill. They need a wide receiver coach with Troy Brown is no longer under contract and a tight end coach after Will Lawing left for Ohio State.
