Projected top NFL pick declares for the NFL Draft
The UNC red-shirt sophomore quarterback Drake Maye has officially declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. Maye is projected to be a top-three pick, along with Caleb Williams next year.
The Tarheel started only one game in 2021 before becoming the starter the last two seasons. He owns a 64.9 completion percentage (618/952) for 8,018 yards and 63 touchdowns over his UNC career.
The 21-year old does have the ability to extend plays, making 302 rushing attempts, rushing for 1,209 yards, while averaging four yards per carry, to go along with 16 rushing touchdowns.
“I have decided to forego the bowl game and declare for the NFL Draft. Forever and always, Go Heels!” Maye said at the end of a long thank you note to his family, UNC coaching staff and fans.
Draft projections can change between now and the April NFL Draft, but Maye is expected to land either number two or three with Williams going first overall.
"We've never battled with our teams on the field," Maye said about Williams. "The media has put a battle between our playing. He's a great player and a good friend of mine, but I'm trying to prove that I can be the best quarterback in this draft."
The New England Patriots could land their next franchise quarterback if they remain in their current draft position, which currently sits at number two. Coming off a win against the Steelers, they sit at an abysmal 3-10 as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in their next matchup.
