The Red Sox are still searching for a new head of baseball ops to replace Chaim Bloom. That search has reportedly not gone to plan for Boston. The club has been met with resistance from candidates who have rejected the opportunity to interview for the role.
One name has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Bloom. Former Marlins general manager Mike Hill has been connected to the team’s vacancy, per MassLive’s Sean McAdam.
It’s unknown whether the Red Sox have interviewed Hill for Bloom’s role. The former Marlins general manager has an extensive résumé in baseball.
“There isn’t anything that Mike hasn’t done in the game,” a friend told McAdam. “He’s played, been a president of baseball operations, a GM, a farm director and overseen a scouting department.”
Hill’s Marlins were very successful during his time with their organization. As the Fish’s front office leader, he owns a 455-575 record (.442 winning percentage).
During his tenure with Miami, Hill flipped star hitters Christian Yelich, Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, J.T. Realmuto and Dee Gordon for prospects.
That prospect haul includes the likes of Sandy Alcantara, Lewis Brinson, Zac Gallen, Jorge Alfaro and Sixto Sanchez.
One knock on Hill’s time with the Marlins was the inability to consistently draft, while also having former owner Jeffrey Loria flip flopping on spending money on his major league product.
Hill was let go in 2021 after Derek Jeter decided a new voice was needed in Miami’s front office. The Marlins would later hire Kim Ng as general manager to replace the 52-year-old.
McAdam cited that sources told him Boston has struggled to interview candidates for its front office role. The lack of stability for the position, not being able to hire a new field manager and a front office with many returning senior officials has made the vacancy unappealing to many in the game.
If Boston were to hire Hill, he would leave behind his current role where he serves as MLB’s Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations. Hill is in charge of umpires and on-field discipline.
