Pitcher from Kiké Hernández trade putting up good results in Worcester
WooSox reliever Justin Hagenman came over in a trade deadline move that also saw Nick Robertson arrive with him. While Robertson has been on the 40-man roster since arriving and is currently in the Red Sox rotation, that leaves Hagenman as the bigger mystery to fans due to being in Triple-A since being acquired.
One could argue that the Penn State product has shown more success than Robertson since coming over.
Hagenman has now appeared in 14 games for the WooSox and has a 3.55 ERA over his 25.1 innings pitched. The right-hander has never been a big strikeout pitcher. He is successful by throwing strikes and limiting walks. Over the 25 innings pitched in Worcester, Hagenman has only walked 9 batters. He threw 44 pitches in his last outing and 54 pitches in the outing before that. He can give a bullpen some length and put up quality innings while doing so.
Barring an add to the 40-man roster this offseason, Hagenman is eligible to be selected in the MLB Rule 5 Draft. Given his versatility to start games and come in out of the bullpen, he might be an intriguing add for a team to take a flyer on.
If not selected, the 26-year-old would be a prime candidate to either slide into the WooSox starting rotation or be a high leverage pitcher for the team starting next season. It is very possible we see him in a Chris Murphy type role, where he can be a bulk inning option out of the bullpen.
