WooSox manager Chad Tracy impressed by newly promoted pitcher 'throwing hard'
Luis Guerrero put up some pretty impressive numbers while pitching in Double-A this season. In his 43 appearances, the right-hander has gone 3-2 with a 1.81 ERA. That great start to the year earned him a well-deserved promotion to Triple-A Worcester where he has appeared in two games so far for the WooSox.
“Just two outings and obviously the first one was electric and the second one he struggled in the save situation where he was having trouble finding the zone.” WooSox manager Chad Tracy said about Guerrero. “I was talking to Abbey about it and we thought it looked worse than it is. He walked four in a row to tie the game and ground ball base hit and it was game over. First two guys he had 3-2 and were a pitch away from striking out both guys and the whole thing could have gone very different.”
Guerrero’s biggest calling card is his fastball, as he tops out at 100 MPH with the pitch. He rounds out his pitch mix with a splitter and a slider. His manager came away impressed after seeing the mix over the two innings.
“Just watching him throw looked damn hard.” Tracy added. “He was throwing hard and was showing a really good slider that night too. We are going to try to get him in there as much as we can over these last couple of weeks and keep getting his feet wet at this level. He has really good stuff.”
Barring any Rule 5 draft selections being taken from the organization, Guerrero will find himself in a battle for the closer role in Worcester with AJ Politi, Ryan Fernandez, and Christopher Troye.
