Phillies DFA former Red Sox pitching prospect Noah Song
Former Red Sox pitching prospect Noah Song was designated for assignment on Saturday, the Phillies announced.
Song was selected by the Phillies in last December’s Rule 5 draft. Philadelphia had to make a roster decision on the right-hander, they elected to not add him to the 26-man roster, instead will move on.
"(The major-league coaching staff) hasn't really seen him," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said about Song on Saturday night. "We trust the people who have seen him and if they think it can work then we try to make it work. There just wasn't enough there."
The Phillies have until Tuesday’s trade deadline to trade Song to another club. If any team acquires Song, they would have to follow the Rule 5 cadence, meaning he would have to remain on their active major league roster (or IL) for the remainder of the season.
If Song is not traded by the Phillies, he will then be placed on waivers and can be claimed. If he goes unclaimed, the Phillies have to offer him back to Boston for $25,000, which is half of what they paid to draft him in December.
Song was once a top pitching prospect in the Sox system, selected in the fourth round from the Naval Academy in 2019. The 26-year-old hadn’t pitched in a professional game prior to this season (Aug. 29, 2019).
The former Sox farmhand went 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA in eight games in stints with three of Philadelphia's minor league teams while on the major league injured list with a lower-back strain.
