Alex Cora gives potential timeline for Chris Sale’s return
Chris Sale is inching closer to his return to the Red Sox.
Sale will begin a rehab assignment with the WooSox on Tuesday in Syracuse and pitch three innings, manager Alex Cora said Saturday before the second game of the Giants series.
The left-hander is then expected to pitch again at Triple-A next Sunday (Aug. 6). Following the two starts, Boston will reassess his situation and decide if Sale’s ready to be activated.
it’s possible Sale could return on Aug. 11 when the Sox begin a series against the Tigers from Fenway Park.
Cora told reporters that the club is considering activating Sale before his arm is fully built up. The Sox could utilize Sale as an opener in each of his starts, going three or four innings as he gets stronger.
“We know that he’s going two (rehab assignments) at least,” Cora said. “And then from there we’ll know more.”
Sale tossed live batting practice at Polar Park on Thursday. It was the first time that Sale faced live batters since landing on the injured list with a stress fracture in his scapula (shoulder blade) in early June.
