The Patriots are adding another quarterback to the mix. The team is signing former Notre Dame signal caller Ian Book, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Book was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He started one game for New Orleans as a rookie, going 12-for-20 for 135 yards with two interceptions in a loss to the Dolphins on Dec. 27, 2021.
He was waived by the Saints and later claimed by the Eagles in 2022. Book spent all of last year as the Eagles’ No. 3 quarterback behind All-Pro Jalen Hurts and Gardner Minshew II.
The new Patriots’ quarterback was initially linked to the team on Tuesday, after NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported Book would come in for a workout.
Book lands with the Patriots after elevating Bailey Zappe to the 53-man roster before Week 1 and needing a replacement for Matt Corral who has left the team.
The move to bring in Book continues to show the team is not comfortable with their backup quarterback situation. If Zappe stays as the Jones’ backup, Book can learn the playbook as a member of the practice squad.
Malik Cunningham is also on the Patriots practice squad, he has also been working out at wide receiver.
