Patriots sign special teams star Chris Board (report)
The Patriots have agreed to terms with special teams star Chris Board on a two-year, $6.7 million deal, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
The 6-foot-2, 239-pound linebacker has primarily played on special teams the last five years.
Board, 27, entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State in 2018. He began his career with the Ravens and played in 67 in a four-year span.
In 2022, Board joined the Lions on a one-year, $2 million deal.
The Patriots will utilize Board on special teams alongside captain Matthew Slater. He will also serve as depth at linebacker behind Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jahlani Tavai and recently re-signed Raekwon McMillan and Mack Wilson.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had high praise of Board following defeating the Lions this past season.
“Board, that’s the best special teams player we’ll play against all year,” Belichick said, leading up to the eventual Week 5 win over Detroit. “He’s great. A great player.”
