Patriots sign former Bengals tight end adding depth to the roster
The Patriots are signing tight end Mitchell Wilcox, according to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed. This move comes on the heels of the team hosting three tight ends in Foxboro for a workout.
The other two players the team worked out were Sean McKeon and Brycen Hopkins, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Wilcox has played three years in the NFL, all with the Bengals. Playing in 48 career games, nine starts with 29 catches (35 targets) for 211 yards and one touchdown. His only career touchdown came in a Week 15 matchup (2022) against the Buccaneers. Joe Burrow hit Wilcox with a 12-yard pass in the end zone.
Wilcox was an undrafted free agent signing by the Bengals following the 2020 draft. He played his college ball at South Florida. The 27-year-old is a former first-team All-AAC (2018) and second-team All-AAC (2016).
During his time at South Florida, Wilcox played in 39 games with 100 catches for 1,326 yards and one touchdown.
Wilcox was non-tendered by Cincinnati as a restricted free agent back in March. He will now join a depth chart in New England that includes La’Michael Pettway, Austin Hooper, and team captain Hunter Henry, whom the team extended this offseason.
