Patriots re-sign two players ahead of NFL free agency
The New England Patriots have re-signed offensive lineman James Ferentz and linebacker Raekwon McMillan ahead of the start to NFL free agency.
Ferentz agreed to a one-year contract extension through 2023. The terms for McMillan have not yet been announced by the team.
The veteran backup has spent the last five seasons in New England. Last season, he started at center and interior lineman. Keeping Ferentz in the fold for 2023, it allows the Patriots internal depth on the offensive line.
"He's been in our system a long time," said Bill Belichick of Ferentz this past season. "He definitely knows what to do. Smart kid. Played all three positions in there center and guard. So, if James has to play, I'm sure he'll play well for us."
Ferentz is the second Patriots lineman to be re-signed this offseason. New England also brought back tackle Conor McDermott back in February.
McMillan who orginially signed with the Patriots in 2021 as a free agent returns and provides depth at inside linebacker behind Ja’Whaun Bentley and Jahlani Tavai.
The 27-year-old played in 16 games last season, starting one, made 35 tackles, one sack and returned a fumble for a touchdown.
