Patriots name team captains
Five captains announced ahead of Sunday’s home opener against the Eagles
The Patriots have announced their team captains for the upcoming season. Five of the names remain the same from last season with one new addition. Devin McCourty was a captain last season so there is one new name. Here are the six team captains:
QB Mac Jones- Jones is now entering his third year with New England and second as a team captain. His growth is the single most important aspect of this upcoming season beyond wins and losses.
TE Hunter Henry- The newest captain of the Patriots. After spending 5 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Henry signed with New England in 2021. He started his first season with nine touchdowns, but only got two last season as the offense sputtered. Henry will look to be a big part of the success for New England in the red zone this season.
C David Andrews- This will be the 7th time that Andrews has been named team captain. The former Georgia Bulldog is entering his ninth season as a Patriot and the veteran on a young offensive line.
DE Deatrich Wise- This is the second straight season that Wise has been named team captain. He extended with Patriots back in 2021 for four years. He will be entering his seventh season in the NFL after being drafted in fourth round by New England in 2017.
LB Ja’Whaun Bentley- Coming off a brand new two year extension Bentley starts his sixth season in New England. Bentley was a team captain in 2020, but then handed over the title for one season when Dont’a Hightower returned. This will be his first time being team captain for back to back seasons.
ST Matt Slater- The special teams ace is currently the longest tenured Patriot. The future hall of famer is headed into his 13th season as team captain. Slater is back for is 15th season and will be celebrating his 38th birthday tomorrow on the 9th.
