Atlanta Falcons interview Bill Belichick for vacant head coach position
After parting ways with the New England Patriots last week, former head coach Bill Belichick has interviewed with a potential new team.
On Monday, the 71-year-old coach, interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Falcons are in need of new head coach after firing Arthur Smith at the conclusion of the regular season.
Belichick spent 24 seasons in New England, compiling a record of 302-165 and won six Super Bowl titles. One of the Super Bowl victories came against the Falcons, where the Patriots came back from a 28-3 deficit to win Super Bowl LI, 34-28 in overtime.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank and CEO Rich McKay are beginning their search for a new head coach and Belichick has been rumored to land there since he left New England. The team is going to conduct a broad search for its next coach.
"Where you look should be incredibly broad and should include head-coaching experience. There is something to head-coaching experience," McKay said. "But it has to be the right head-coaching experience. That is not so easy to find, because it's not been easy for me to find over the years.
"But I think, if you find one, should you consider it? Absolutely. Why wouldn't you?"
Blank has never hired a head coach with previous head coaching experience. The future Hall of Fame coach is the sixth candidate to interview for the Falcons job. Ravens assistant beach coach Anthony Weaver and defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan have also interviewed.
Belichick is third All time in regular season wins with 302, behind George Halas with 318 and Don Shula who has 328 wins. Belichick also is the NFL's playoff wins leader with 31, eight ahead of Andy Reid. Combined, Belichick has 333 wins, 14 behind Shula's 347 wins.
