Nick Pivetta finished the 2023 campaign in impressive fashion
For Nick Pivetta, the 2023 campaign has been full of ups and downs. The veteran right-hander began the season in the rotation before being moved to the bullpen. Over the last few weeks, he has returned to his starting role and put together a stellar September as the Red Sox faded out of contention.
In five starts this month, the former fourth-round pick posted a 2.43 ERA while striking out 43 batters. Opponents only hit .186 against him, as he allowed nine earned runs in 33.1 innings of work. Every time he took the mound, Pivetta gave the Red Sox a chance to win.
Additionally, the Canadian native did not allow an earned run in his last two starts of the season. With the Red Sox’s rotation full of question marks entering the offseason, Pivetta has shown late that he can be part of the solution. That is an encouraging sign for the Red Sox in what has been a brutal September.
Due to his recent success, Pivetta lowered his ERA to a career-best 4.04. While he was unable to match his innings total from last season, Pivetta did set a career-high in appearances with 38. After a brutal start, the 30-year-old proved to be a valuable piece regardless of the situation.
“Good fastball, good curveball, good tempo, throwing strikes, the slider was good. He wanted to keep going, but I felt like that was good enough,” Cora told reporters on NESN’s postgame coverage. “He wanted to keep going, but I felt like that was good enough. Well, he feels like it’s not over yet. He said he’s gonna be able to go on Sunday. We’ll see about that. It was impressive, and that tells you who he is.”
While the next few months are full of uncertainty for the Red Sox, Pivetta has shown that he can be relied on as they try to get back to the postseason.
