The Pittsburgh Steelers announced today that they have fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada. The former coordinator held the title with Pittsburgh since the 2020 season.
“Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. I appreciate Matt’s hard work and dedication, and I wish him the best moving forward in his careers.” head coach Mike Tomlin said in a team statement.
Under Canada, the Steelers really struggled to move the ball this season despite a 6-4 record in a competitive AFC North. Pittsburgh ranks 28th in points per game (16.6), 28th in yards per game (280.1), and 31st in passing yards per game (170).
Over the last two games Canada, 51, called plays from the sidelines instead of up in the coaching box. They went 2-0 against the Titans and Packers before dropping their most recent game against the Browns, managing only to score 10 points.
The understanding is that the Steelers are expected to have running back coach Eddie Faulkner take over as offensive coordinator, with quarter back coach Mike Sullivan handling play-calling duties per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Faulkner has been with Pittsburgh since 2019 while Sullivan has been there since 2021. Sullivan was the quarterback coach for Eli Manning with the Giants when they defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
The Steelers will debut their realigned coaching staff against their divisional rival, the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals are 5-5 and just lose Joe Burrow. The game is in Cincinnati and will carry heavy playoff and divisional implications.
