NFL Network analyst on potential landing spot for Baker Mayfield: ‘Don’t sleep on the New England Patriots’
The Patriots needs a starting quarterback and have options to fill the most important void on the roster. New England owns the third overall pick in the NFL Draft and have been linked to the top quarterback prospects. They could also open up their checkbook and dip into the more than $100 million in cap space and add a veteran free agent to play under center.
NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah added some fuel to the fire for Patriots fans, linking free agent Baker Mayfield to New England.
While at the NFL Combine, Jeremiah said he heard from people around the league they don’t see Mayfield heading back to Tampa Bay.
“We’ve all assumed that Baker just goes right back to Tampa,” Jeremiah said. “Some would say, ‘don’t sleep on the New England Patriots.’ And if the New England Patriots are in the Baker business, then the No. 3 pick is up for sale.”
With the offense depleted and lacking true talent, the Patriots will need to assure Mayfield or any free agent quarterback that they’ll address the warts on offense.
Mayfield had a strong season with the Buccaneers in 2023, reaching career highs in passing yards (4,044), passing touchdowns (28), and completion percentage (64.3).
If Mayfield does end up in New England, the Patriots could either draft Marvin Harrison Jr. or an offensive lineman to protect Mayfield. The Patriots could trade back and add more draft picks to their arsenal.
