Following a stellar spring training, expectations were high for Red Sox prospect Mikey Romero. Injuries limited the former first-round pick during his first three years in the minors as he made it to Double-A. Now healthy, Romero is showcasing his potential.
In 61 games this year, the San Diego native has posted a .265 batting average and driven in 39 runs. He has also shown some power as 29 of his 66 hits have gone for extra bases. With a little more than two months remaining in the regular season, Romero is on track to surpass his numbers from last year.
While staying healthy this year has been crucial, Romero has also demonstrated excellent plate discipline. He has drawn a career-high 19 walks in 17 fewer games than he played last year. When the former first-round pick has reached base, he has been a threat to run with a career high of four stolen bases.
Currently, Romero is ranked as the organization's eighth-best prospect by MLB.com. The only infielders ranked ahead of him are Franklin Arias and Justin Gonzales. Of those three, Romero is the closest to the majors and projected to make his debut next year.
Although the Red Sox are deep when it comes to infielders, Romero’s play this year has been a welcome sign. He has continued to make solid contact against Double-A pitching and currently has the highest on-base percentage of his career. If he can continue to get on base, then he may be at Worcester some point this summer.
As the minor league season winds down, Romero will be a prospect to watch. He has shown some of the promise that made him the 24th overall pick three years ago. Now the key will be finishing strong as the at-bats continue to pile up.
Thanks for this update on Romero! Will have to head down to Hadlock Field and watch him one of these evenings!
