The Boston Bruins won their season and home opener on Wednesday, 3-1 against the Blackhawks.
Bruins 19-year-old rookie Matthew Poitras has a big part of the victory, recording his first NHL regular season assist in the first period of the game.
The point came a little over 11 minutes into the game, Poitras fed defenseman Brandon Carlo who shot the puck on net when Trent Frederic deflection resulted in a goal.
Boston added two more unanswered goals in the team’s centennial season opening win.
Following the game, Frederic offered praise to his young teammate.
“I thought he was really good,” Frederic told reporters. “It helps getting an assist in that first period. I told him, I think it took me over 100 periods to have that happen. So, I don’t know what that feels like, but it’s probably good. I thought he played really good. He did everything he did in the preseason and even better.”
With his first professional game under his belt, Poitras is hoping to stick around for the entire season.
“I mean, it's awesome. It's a dream come true to finally be here and have a chance to play in the NHL, so I’m not going to take it for granted,” Poitras told WEEI’s The Skate Podcast on Tuesday.
Poitras survived each round of cuts in Bruins training camp while showing his worth during the five preseason games he participated in.
The rookie will have his ups and downs as he develops into a NHL player. He got off to a great start making an impression in front of his coaches, teammates and fans.
“I think, for me, nothing changes,” he said. “From the start it's just been like it's a tryout, and I think it'll just continue to be a tryout every practice, every game. For me, I want to be here all year, so I’m trying to make a good impression every time I’m on the ice and hopefully get to stick around for the year.”
