With each day of training camp, there are always storylines that emerge. Today was all about outside linebacker Matthew Judon. He was spotted at practice but as a limited participant. The official reasoning was not given, but from a report this morning, it looks to be contract related.
According to Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston the premier edge rusher would like a bump in his annual pay, but the relationship with the New England Patriots remains amicable.
As Perry points out Judon ranks 20th among AAV at his position, which is now a bargain considering his overall production the last two seasons.
The Patriots sack leader had 15.5 last season, which ranked fifth in the NFL and was also tied for the most tackles amongst those sack leaders with 60. Not only has the production been there on the field but so has his games played. He has played in every game since signing with New England back in the 2021 offseason.
The about to be 31-year-old ranked fifth in AAV among edge rushers when he originally signed his four year contract with New England. His contract was among the top, but as Judon correctly mentions the market changes.
Despite wanting a pay raise Judon, remains loyal to the Patriots and went as far as to say he wants to retire in New England earlier this week.
He emphasized that again today.
Former Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel has made it his mission to repeatedly criticize Bill Belichick and his coaching legacy.
This all started back in 2007 after Samuel held out in training camp before ultimately signing his franchise tag. He was not happy about not being extended a contract and ultimately left New England for the Philadelphia Eagles the following offseason.
The current Patriots top pass rusher not only has stated his likeness for the Patriots, but today he publicly showed he remains loyal to Belichick.
Samuel posted โLetโs see how much he like Belichick nowโ in response to a tweet about Judonโs current contract situation. Judon then replied back to Samuel saying โWill forever be my guy. Donโt let that money effect my emotions Asante.โ
This is a clear sign despite the contract situation this should not be a season long concern.
