Matt Barnes to miss series the against the Red Sox
Matt Barnes has this week’s series between the Marlins and Red Sox circles on his calendar.
“Yes it is,” Barnes said to MassLive on circling his calendar to face the Red Sox this season.
Unfortunately, longtime Sox reliever will miss the series due to being on the injured list with a left hip impingement.
Barnes went down with the injury on June 2 after he was tagged for five runs while recording just one out in an outing against the Padres.
The injury has wiped out the entire month for the former All-Star reliever. Barnes has begun throwing bullpen sessions last Thursday. His throwing session was the first bullpen since landing on the IL.
Barnes was designated for assignment back in January as first reported by Beyond the Monster.
The Sox traded Barnes to the Marlins for left-hander Richard Bleier.
Since joining the Red Sox, Bleier has struggled on the mound. The southpaw is 1-1 with a 5.85 ERA, 1.350 WHIP, 5.42 FIP in 20 innings (19 games).
Barnes hasn’t faired much better, he’s 1-0 with a 5.48 ERA, 1.641 WHIP, 4.16 FIP in 21 1/3 innings (24 games).
A first-round pick of the Red Sox back in 2011, Barnes left the Sox organization with the second most relief appearances in franchise history.
“I’m very fortunate for everything the Red Sox have given me and the opportunities they have provided me for the first 12 years of my career,” Barnes said. “It’s kind of a bittersweet ending. No matter where I go, nobody can ever take away the things I’ve accomplished with my teammates and what we’ve done as a whole in Boston, the relationships I’ve built and the friends I’ve made.”
