Marlins reportedly discussed acquiring Justin Turner (report)
The hype and excitement around the trade deadline has come to an end. The Red Sox made one deal, acquiring infielder Luis Urías from the Brewers for minor league pitcher Bradley Blalock.
Despite the one move, Boston reportedly almost subtracted a big piece of their team and clubhouse leader, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
The Marlins and Red Sox had “extensive discussions” regarding Justin Turner, however, the return for Boston was not noted by Rosenthal.
Miami felt that they were close to landing the clutch veteran infielder, but after the deal fell through, they pivoted to acquiring Josh Bell and Jake Burger.
Ahead of the trade deadline, Chaim Bloom said that he was looking for controllable players to add to the team’s current core. The Marlins are deep in controllable starting pitching, you have to wonder what names were discussed and why the deal fell through.
Earlier in the week, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported, “Teams that have asked Red Sox about Justin Turner have been told there is no interest in dealing him.”
Turner has a $13.4 million player option for next season, he can decline that and become an unrestricted free agent in the winter. The 38-year-old is having an impressive first season in Boston, hitting .286 with 17 homers, 71 RBO and a .837 OPS. He is likely to decline the player option and seek a bigger payday in free agency.
