Marcelo Mayer to participate in the Arizona Fall League?
Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer was shutdown for the rest of the regular season, per MLB.com’s Ian Browne, and will continue his rehab from left shoulder inflammation down in Fort Myers.
The 20-year-old Mayer was placed on the injured list on Aug. 3 with left shoulder inflammation, will instead continue his rehab down in Fort Myers, according to Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham.
"Marcelo will not play again this year in Portland, said Abraham. “He will focus on his rehab in Fort Myers - strengthening of his shoulder, so he can have a full, normal offseason. We are very pleased with the progress he has made so far."
Mayer is expected to take part in some instructional league activities beginning next week, per The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
The Red Sox could have Mayer participate in the Arizona Fall League, but the expectation is that he would need to be 100% healthy, reported Speier.
Boston will look for Mayer to focus on full offseason where he can come into camp next spring healthy.
The 2023 Arizona Fall League will begin on Oct. 2nd and will wrap up play with the season’s finale, the AFL Championship game, on Saturday. Nov. 11.
