Marcelo Mayer drawing comparisons to two current Major League shortstops
Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer has been sizzling at the plate for the Salem Red Sox this season. After missing time with a sprained wrist, Mayer has been elevating his performance at the plate.
Mayer leads Salem with a .318 batting average in 107 at-bats. In addition to his batting average, Mayer has hit three home runs and has knocked in 22 RBIs. He crushed that third homer back on June 9th.
While Mayer continues to make the game look easy inside the batter’s box, he is drawing comparisons to two current big league shortstops.
Rival scouts and current Red Sox evaluators have begun to say Mayer resembles Corey Seager and Brandon Crawford.
“He's got just a really advanced feel to his game, an ease to his game. I throw those names out there not to set expectations for him or anything,” Red Sox director of amateur scouting Paul Toboni told MLB.com.
“But I say Seager because Marcelo does have a little bit of a bigger build. I say Brandon Crawford, because if you watch this kid take pregame ground balls, he's one of the cockiest defenders I've ever seen in my life. I say that with positive tone behind it, where he's flipping balls with his glove, and catching balls through the legs, and going behind the back. It's not like he's showing off, it's just kind of his nature, it all comes pretty easy to him,” added Toboni.
