Marcelo Mayer climbs up the MLB Pipeline top prospects list, will play in All-Star Futures Game
The Red Sox have a prospect within their farm system that has cracked the top five in the MLB Pipeline list of 100 prospects in baseball.
MLB Pipeline released their new list on Monday that featured shortstop Marcelo Mayer as the league’s No. 5 prospect.
The 20-year-old Mayer moved up four spots from No. 9 when the last ranking was released. The Sox top prospect is currently playing for Double-A Portland.
Mayer owns a .177 average with 14 hits, four doubles, five homers, 13 RBI and .676 OPS in 21 games. He has hit .250 with 12 homers, 47 RBIs and an .813 OPS in 56 games across both High-A and Double-A.
“Like fellow Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.) product and former Red Sox All-Star Adrian Gonzalez, Mayer has a sweet left-handed stroke and advanced hitting ability,” wrote about Mayer.
“Despite a surprisingly high 25 percent strikeout rate in his first two pro seasons, he has displayed the ability to recognize pitches, make good swing decisions and use the entire field. He’s adding strength to his 6-foot-3 frame, and his penchant for hard contact should translate into 25 homers per season once he learns to drive the ball in the air more consistently,” added MLB Pipeline.
That wasn’t the only accolade announced for Mayer on Monday. The former No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft was also named to the 2023 All-Star Futures Game in Seattle.
Ceddanne Rafaela and Brayan Bello were both participants in the Futures Game over the last few years.
