Marcelo Mayer and Nick Yorke continue to crush the ball
Marcelo Mayer and Nick Yorke, the highly touted middle infield tandem, are continuing to crush the ball with the Portland Sea Dogs. In just his 8th game in AA, Marcelo Mayer crushed his second home run, while Nick Yorke logged his 8th.
Here’s a look at Mayer’s 2-run shot. In a 1-1 count, Akron Rubberducks pitcher Jack Leftwich hung an 84 mph curveball that the 20-year-old shortstop did not miss. It was another pull-side homer, just like his first.
Speaking of pullside homers, now here’s a look at Yorke’s bomb over the Maine Monster. Again with Leftwich pitching, but this time in a 2-1 count, the 21-year-old 2nd baseman pulled the hands in on a 96 mph sinker.
The middle infield tandem has hammered the ball this week. Mayer hit his first AA home run on Wednesday and Yorke followed him up on Thursday. For two guys whose hit tools are their top feature, it’s exciting to see the power come along. According to MLB Pipeline, Mayer boasts a 55-grade power tool, while Yorke has a 50-grade.
Going into Saturday’s matchup, both Yorke and Mayer will be looking to make it their third straight game with a home run.
