Malik Cunningham was part of the Patriots’ game plan (report)
Patriots quarterback Malik Cunningham has been on the practice squad over the first five weeks of the season. The former Louisville quarterback has split time working out under center and at wide receiver.
According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, head coach Bill Belichick might utilize Cunningham in a number of ways on Sunday against the Raiders.
The Patriots signed Cunningham off the practice squad and he will be active on the 53-man roster.
Howe noted that due to the Patriots having seven players already ruled out for Sunday. Cunningham’s role has not been yet identified for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.
“Malik’s worked really hard and made a lot of improvement. He never really played in the kicking game at Louisville, so he’s started to show up there,” Belichick said during his Friday press conference with the media. “He’s a smart kid, works hard, and the opportunities he’s had, he’s shown a lot of improvement.”
Cunningham could see time on special times but it’s seen as a long shot that they’d experiment with him on the defensive side of the football. The defensive back room is thin and Belichick has shown he’ll move offensive players on defense. Most recently Julian Edelman was used as a defensive back and Troy Brown during his heyday with the team.
