Josh Giddey allegations: NBA investigating whether Thunder star had an inappropriate relationship with minor
The NBA has opened an investigation into Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey on whether he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor, league spokesman Mike Bass said on Friday.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania first reported the alleged incident involving the 6-foot-8 player.
Allegations arose against Giddey when a post on social media surfaced on Wednesday night.
In a since-deleted post, an anonymous social media user said a girl who is seen with Giddey in videos and photographs was allegedly a high school junior at the time.
Rumors have swirled online alleging that the girl was only 15 years old, however that is unconfirmed. The social media account has since been deactivated.
Giddey practiced with the team on Friday afternoon, but he and Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault offered no comment when asked about the situation.Â
"I understand the question, obviously, but there's no further comment right now," Giddey said to reporters. "I get the question guys, I completely understand you guys want to know about it. Just for right now, I don't have anything to say."
"Personal matter, and I have no comment on it," Daigneault said. "And that will be my answer on anything related."
The 21-year-old was the No. 6 overall selection out of Australia in the 2021 NBA Draft. The guard out of Melbourne is the first NBA Global Academy graduate to be selected in the NBA draft. The institution is run in partnership with Basketball Australia, based in Canberra.
This season, Giddey is averaging 12.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for the Thunder. He was named to the league’s All-Rookie Second Team in 2022.
