Jorge Alfaro continues to swing hot bat for WooSox
Jorge Alfaro was one of the final cuts when the Red Sox were determining their Opening Day Roster. Now 39 games into the season in Worcester, Alfaro remains on the AAA roster.
Alfaro elected to stay in the Red Sox organization on a minor league deal. It was an interesting move for the 29-year-old catcher, who carries 478 games of major league experience. He was also coming off playing 82 games for the San Diego Padres in 2022, as well as an insane Winter League showing in the Dominican.
After all of that, Alfaro has played in 31 of the 39 games so far for the WooSox and has been hitting the ball consistently to start the season. The Colombian native is hitting .338 and has an .879 OPS to add to it. He is slotted into the 3-hole almost every single night for Worcester’s lineup.
That stat sheet has been piling up in Worcester for Alfaro and he is in the top five of most offensive statistics across all the Red Sox minor league affiliates. He ranks first in hits with 44, third in doubles with 9, second in RBIs with 23, second in average with .338, and fourth in slugging percentage with .508.
It’s been a constant theme with Alfaro and his bat this season, with only the defense as the biggest question mark. We have seen him appear behind the plate for 19 games and he appeared at first base for one game. He hasn’t made an error behind the plate and has thrown out five base runners and has given up 22 stolen bases. He made one error in his only start at first base this year.
We have also seen Alfaro take grounders pregame at third base, which he hasn’t played in a game at third since 2018 for a total of one inning played. It will be interesting to see how much time he gets at first base over the next month, as adding the versatility will only help his case to earn that promotion.
It remains to be seen if Alfaro will be called upon if Reese Mcguire or Connor Wong begin to struggle. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a call up towards September when rosters expand, or if an injury occurs to either of the two catchers on the MLB roster.
