Jorge Alfaro staying consistent at the plate in Worcester
Jorge Alfaro was left off the Red Sox roster when the team broke camp, which was a surprise to some after a fairly successful WBC and spring training. The team elected to start with the tandem of Connor Wong and Reese Mcguire to start the year.
That omission hasn’t slowed Alfaro one bit.
Alfaro has had a good start to the year in Worcester, carrying a .370 batting average along with a .878 OPS. The Columbian native has found himself in the third hole in every game he has started. For a guy who has hit 125 career home runs between the major and minor leagues, Alfaro has yet to have one leave the yard this season in 11 games. The 29-year-old catcher has added seven RBIs as well.
WooSox manager Chad Tracy told Beyond the Monster after opening day that Alfaro will be in the lineup pretty much every day, given the fact that he is the top depth option for Boston. Worcester is carrying two other catchers in Ronaldo Hernandez and Caleb Hamilton, which Tracy has the task of trying to get all three involved and get reps.
Alfaro has started seven games at catcher with another four starts at DH. He had another solid day at the plate Sunday for the WooSox, as he went 2-4 with two singles. On the two singles, he was able to shoot the ball through the gaps on both sides of the field. The bat has proved to be a consistent threat, but the fielding has always been the biggest question mark for Alfaro. He has two passed balls so far, but no errors in his seven games at catcher.
The questions remains, will we be seeing Alfaro soon up in the big league club?
